Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital And Research Centre

An Unrealistic Idea (Dream) That Eventually Came To Reality

When one think about achieving impossible then it is like a dream because it does not follow the practical rules of the world and in order to convert that dream into reality you should have courage and self confidence to changing the impossible to possible. This is what has happened in case of Shaukat Khanam Cancer Hospital. It was a dream in hope to save the poor patients that cannot afford to bear cancer treatment because of it being so expensive worldwide, and thinking of this treatment for 100% free of charge is what i already mentioned impossible! but this is now a known fact that 75% of the patients going to this hospital for cancer treatment receive world class cancer treatment free of charge.

Over the past decade, Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research center has established itself as a center of excellence providing comprehensive care free of cost to thousands of indigent cancer patients. This pioneering, state-of-the-art hospital located in the heart of the Punjab was founded by Imran Khan, one of Pakistan's most illustrious cricketers and one of the famous names in Pakistan's politics these days. As a charitable institute, it is funded predominantly from the donations of friends and well-wishers from around the country and across the world.

Motivation To Start This Project

Humans learn from their experiences and an event in one's life can change that person forever. This is what was happened with Imran Khan, whose mother "Shaukat Khanum" died due to cancer. His mother's death and the personal experience of dealing with cancer in a loved one convinced him of the need for a state of the art cancer center with access to everyone, including those who could not otherwise afford the expensive care. The result was the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Center, in Lahore, the first and only cancer hospital of international standards in Pakistan, dedicated to providing first-class treatment of cancer to all its patients, irrespective of their ability to pay.

Development Of the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital

Built 100% on Charity Money and wIthout any major sponsor

The development of the project was 100% on charity basis and the fact that it was built by all Pakistani's who contributed their money according to their ability. Imran Khan went from city to city all over Pakistan to collect charity in which people of all age and gender came forward and contributed to build this hospital. However no large amount came from big organizations as sponsor of this project, so financing the project was a major challenge.

The total cost to build this mega charity project consume around 600 million rupees which is equivalent to 26 million USD at that time, which was a huge amount of money that no one could ever think collectable without major financing agencies. But this was converted into reality by average Pakistani people out of which major contributes were the children that arranged money at school level from their pocket money and forcing their parents to contribute. If you check the video documentary below you will see a sea of income coming into the charity fund on a daily basis during the construction time. This was the passion of average Pakistani Citizen which made a unique environment of getting people together to contribute in one single cause that will help their future generations.

Since opening in 1994, the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Center, has came to be recognized as one of the most credible and resilient charities in Pakistan.
